As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we recognize the power, resilience, and brilliance of Black women who have shaped and elevated media spaces. The landscape of media has evolved tremendously, from radio to television, print to digital, and now social media, but one thing remains constant—Black women have been at the forefront of pushing the culture forward.

Despite being historically underrepresented and undervalued, Black women have continuously broken barriers, demanding spaces where our voices are heard, our stories are told, and our perspectives are respected. The media industry was not built with us in mind, but through sheer determination, we carved our own lanes. We’ve battled against pay disparities, lack of opportunities, and systemic biases that sought to silence us. Yet, we rose—creating our own platforms, leading newsrooms, directing films, producing content, and shaping the narratives that define culture today.

From the pioneering work of Ida B. Wells to the modern-day influence of women like Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay, Black women have not only participated in media but transformed it. We have turned struggle into strategy and exclusion into empowerment.

This March, we honor the Black women who have paved the way in media, and we begin with a trailblazer who changed the game—Ms. Cathy Hughes. As the founder of Radio One, now Urban One, she built the largest Black-owned media company in the country. She created opportunities where there were none and gave Black voices a platform to be heard loud and clear. Ms. Hughes is a testament to what is possible when Black women refuse to be overlooked and instead take control of our own narratives.

This month, we celebrate the power of Black women in media. Because without us, the story is incomplete.
